Winter Beauty, Part Two
By Producer, Kelly Meinhart

inter is certainly an appropriate time to reflect on life and on the beauty and wonder of nature. Winter 2003 is giving us ample time for that reflection as many of us have spent a good deal of time indoors.

have been taking the opportunity to get outside after many of our recent snowfalls to catalog some of the beauty that has been falling around us, and have been enjoying the peaceful sounds of nature while on my hikes along our waterways and in the woods. On a recent hike along the Conodoguinet Creek, I walked along a pathway of snow four or so inches deep. I was the first to makes tracks. But above, and all around me, the birds sang a melodic tune that kept me company as I ventured into the untouched beauty.

ust upstream I saw a large wading bird along shore. There it was, a Great Blue Heron. I am always amazed at how certain birds stick around during the cold winter months. I was too far away to get a photo, but you can take it from me that he was just a moment of elegance along the water.

hile I have to admit that this winter has been a little rougher than some, it has afforded me time to slow down and appreciate nature for all her simplicity and subtle beauty. While traveling up the Susquehanna River toward Williamsport, I discovered that the further up river I traveled -- the more the river became a waterway of ice chunks. These chunks were broken up and traveling down river. And as I stood along the shoreline I could hear them cracking and breaking - as the temperature changed and the water moved.

his is just part two of my winter journeys. The final edition will air next month and will take us to even more of Pennsylvania's winter wonderlands, so be sure to come back, sit back and enjoy it with me. And the next snowfall, which I'm sure won't be too far away, try to get out and take a little hike, even if it is short - and enjoy the peacefulness of being alone with nature and the quiet of the snowfall.
