The New Jersey State Aquarium
By Kelly Meinhart
love penguins. I always have. They're highly animated creatures who
travel through the water with ease and grace, while at the same time
they can catapult themselves toward the ocean floor at the speed of
a bullet. You can visit with penguins at the New Jersey State Aquarium
in Camden, as I recently did.
also had the opportunity to visit with seals, an octopus, a variety
of sea life representing life in the Atlantic, and even got to touch
a shark. The aquarium provides a variety of learning elements seven
days a week, and I was surprised at just how many people were there
for a Monday afternoon.

of all ages, school groups, moms and dads, and even some kids who
seemed to be skipping classes were learning about marine mammals and
fishes, behind the glass as well as by actually touching starfish,
rays and sharks. It's a wonderful place to bring the kids to engage
them in learning about the natural world.
he
aquarium is right across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, another
cultural learning center, so it would certainly make for a good day
trip! While at the aquarium you may have the opportunity to catch
any one of the variety of live events they offer such as the dive
show where a diver enters the largest tank in the aquarium, "The Deep
Atlantic," to swim with the sharks, turtles, rays and fishes. Or you
may want to catch up with the penguins as they get a lunchtime snack,
or even visit with the seals as they bask in the warm sun.
