Wings Over the Wetlands By Kelly Meinhart, Producer
The Barataria and Terrebonne Basins in South Eastern Louisiana
provide unique wetland habitats for over 400 species of regularly
nesting birds. Additionally, millions of bird species migrate
through the area every year.
The wetlands provide essential stopover habitats for these migrating
species to rest and refuel on their long journeys to and from
Central America. The following production takes us to Louisiana
to learn more about the estuary and to visit with a variety
of folks who are working to preserve the area for birds and
wildlife.
Wetlands throughout the United States, especially in Louisiana,
have been under a tremendous threat from human encroachment.
Taking a look at the species who depend upon these wetlands
and involving a variety of partners is one way to help protect
and preserve them.
Along with highlighting the wetlands and the efforts to protect
them, this insightful video also takes a look at migrating birds,
the history of bird hunting and declining populations, and ultimately
federal protection efforts to protect both native and migratory
species.
