Watershed Snapshot 2004

 ach
year teams of watershed volunteers across Pennsylvania take to the
streams to test the water quality of their area waterways. The data
collected is then forwarded to the Pa Department of Environmental
Protection (Pa DEP) to compile and form an overall ‘snapshot’
of the water quality of Pennsylvania’s streams and rivers. The
statewide effort, called ‘Watershed Snapshot’ is organized
during one week each April, so that all testing is done at the same
time, and within a short period of time.
his year, the event was held from April 16-25, and I had the opportunity
to join in on a few of the events. The first of which was a snapshot
of the Wissahickon Creek, which runs through Philadelphia’s
Fairmount Park and surrounding areas.

70 students from Chestnut Hill College, Wyncote Academy and the Robert
Fulton School joined volunteers from the Center in the Park Senior
Environment Corps (CIPSEC), and the Stroud Water Research Center to
monitor the creek right on site at the Chestnut Hill College.

Center in the Park is an older adult community center in Germantown,
which promotes positive aging and fosters community connections for
older adults in Northwest Philadelphia. The Senior Environment Corp
volunteers monitor stream water quality throughout Philadelphia and
work in active partnerships with other organizations and government
agencies to educate community residents and neighborhood youth about
source water protection and watershed stewardship.
s you can see in the photos, the event was a very valuable experience
for the students who gained a new appreciation for the Wissahickon
Creek and the critters who live there.
