Stormwater Woes
By Kelly Meinhart, Producer

e’ve all seen it – rainwater rushing down sidewalks and streets, puddling up in roadways and parking lots – rainwater becomes Stormwater.

tormwater is not necessarily a natural occurrence. Sure, heavy rains in a short time period will naturally produce too great an amount for the earth’s surface to soak up quickly. But our development of the land via buildings, roadways, and parking lots have created impenetrable surfaces, forcing rainwater to travel much farther, and generally faster, until they reach a creek or stream.

t’s just common sense really. If we pave everything over, how can we expect water to get back into the ground to replenish our underground water reserves? Our actions have caused severe consequences, not only for our water supplies but for our health and safety as well.

he following video, Stormwater Woes, takes a look at two Pennsylvania communities, and how they’re dealing with Stormwater, both to correct past wrongs and to prevent future problems before they happen.
