Mountain Watershed Association
he
Mountain Watershed Association was formed in 1994 to aid and
inform property owners and residents in the Indian Creek Valley
Watershed. The group is based in Melcroft, PA, which is approximately
one-hour south east of Pittsburgh. The main challenges affecting
the watershed are the impacts from abandoned mine drainage (amd)
discharges.
he
group has constructed an amd remediation project, using innovative
technology to increase the effectiveness of the process. The
group is the first in the state to use the technology of windmill
power to aerate the water in the settling ponds, which treat
the water affected by the abandoned mines. Their hope is that
the increased aeration in the water will enhance the drop out
rate of metals in the pond, and increase the treatment levels
of water re-entering the Indian Creek. They are actively studying
the effects of these windmills, and hope that they will be seeing
at least an 87-90% treatment level.
he
volunteers of this association are what make it all happen.
They've got a huge challenge ahead of them, as this watershed
has over 55 surface mines and numerous deep mines which have
toxic metal discharges entering the springs, creeks, wells and
homes of the local residents.
he group is working on several amd sites in the watershed with
the same goal for all - improve the health of all waters in the
Indian Creek Valley Watershed.
