Wise Words from Daniel Zimmerman, Secretary of Lititz Run Watershed Alliance
and Warwick Twp. Manager

uccess Breeds Success,"said Zimmerman of the Lititz Run Watershed Alliance whose accomplishments include opening up four miles of streams through agricultural and private lands, and the establishment of two environmental parks. Under Growing Greener, this watershed group is working on projects to address non-point source pollution, sedimentation and thermal pollution of local waterways.

rojects underway include those that will establish riparian buffers, create warm-season meadows and wetlands for water filtration and wildlife habitat, reestablish a functional floodplain, and restore a stable stream channel. They have also taken on a new agricultural Best Management Program (BMP) to control barnyard run-off at a local farm.

Zimmerman's Words of Advice for Watershed Groups:

Start small
Be patient
Persistence pays
Think long term
Don't assume one agency or entity talks to another
Communicate clearly and constantly
Develop a broad base of contacts or resource pool
Show that youíll do what you say
Don't force anyone to participate
Get yourselves invited onto peopleís property
Work with your developers, school districts, farms and state agencies
Gear your projects to your groupís abilities and resources
Be aware that there is a learning curve and stick with it.
