Juniata Journeys
By Kelly Meinhart
it
back. Now breathe slowly and purposefully. Feel a little
more relaxed? I do. My first sojourn was all about relaxing,
meeting new people, experiencing nature, and having fun!
pproximately
120 people paddled down 8.8 miles of the Juniata on our
first day, and the stage was set just a few moments into
the trip when we spotted two Bald Eagles flying about.
Just down stream from our launch site, one of them perched
on a branch that jetted out over the waterway.
e're
still not sure who was more curious about the siting -
the Eagle or us. But it was a wonderful opportunity for
us to get a close up view of the magnificent bird, and
a glorious beginning to our journey.
ur
outing included sojourners from every walk of life and
career choice. Not to mention two fellas named "Snake-bite"
and "Sasquach!" Several representatives from
DCNR paddled along, including John C. Oliver, Secretary
of DCNR. I also met representatives from a variety of
Native American cultures, who made dinner for us which
included buffalo and venison stew, vegetarian bean stew,
and home made corn bread. Yummy!
t
was a fabulous adventure, and I can't wait to get back
out on the river for my next sojourn! Until then
happy journeys.
