Fayette Festival of Water
By Kelly Meinhart, Producer

pring has sprung! Or at least it’s beginning to feel that way. For the children of Fayette County, PA spring means the opportunity to get out of the classroom to learn about one of our most essential, natural resources – water – and the role it plays in our everyday lives.

n March 9th over 900 sixth graders from nine area middle schools participated in the second annual Fayette County Water Festival. The event was hosted at the Penn State Fayette Campus, and organized by a steering committee of ten different organizations. The goal? Expose kids to water and watersheds in as many ways as possible through hands-on learning.

n total, over twenty-five different presentations were offered, with an exhibit hall displaying over 20 different exhibiters, keynote presentations, and even a short play on biodiversity.

s Heather Knupsky from the Fayette County Conservation District Office, and one of the organizers of the event puts it, “I love to see the reaction on the face of the kids. These types of activities are so important to the learning process – I’m glad to be a part of today’s event.” Be sure to check out the video clips to hear more of Heather’s comments and for additional information on how the event was organized, and by whom.

he Fayette County Water Festival was developed in response to a similar event held in Washington County by the Washington County Watershed Alliance. It was offered free to the schools that participated through Pa DEP education grants and WREN grants, by donated lunches, and by presentations and exhibitors offering their time for free.

s Jeff Fliss, Watershed Manager of the Southwest Regional Office for the Pa DEP said; “It’s great to be starting spring early with a festival for students. I enjoy being in the field with them and teaching the importance of protecting our groundwater from pollution and misuse.”
