Agricultural Best Management Practices (BMPs)
By Kelly Meinhart

arming puts a real strain on our environment in all sorts of ways. By using the land to sustain us, we are slowly depleting it of its nutrients. While at the same time, cattle and other barnyard animals can also be detrimental to land used for farming, as well as nearby streams.

n order to help landowners protect their farmlands many county conservation district offices around the state are helping farmers implement Best Management Practices, or BMPs. These programs provide common sense, valuable solutions to the every day problems of farming. Whether it's installing roof top gutter systems to keep rainwater from overwhelming barnyards and the interiors of barns themselves, or installing fencing systems to keep cattle out of streams, these programs are in place and are working.

ravel along with us to visit with the folks from the Crawford County Conservation District to learn about some of the BMP programs they are implementing in their area.
