AMERICAN RIVERS
They're Making A Difference, and Educating the Public About our Waterways

merican Rivers is a national non-profit conservation organization dedicated to protecting and restoring America's rivers and to fostering a river stewardship ethic.

ounded in 1973 with a focus on increasing the number of rivers protected by the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System, and to preventing the construction of large new dams on our last wild rivers.

oday, in addition to protecting nationally significant rivers, American Rivers' programs focus on dam removal, flood control and hydropower policy reform, endangered species protection, water quality and quantity, and reviving our neighborhood rivers.

long with these conservation efforts, they promote public awareness about why healthy rivers matter — not only for fish and wildlife and not only for kayakers, canoeists, and anglers, but for our own communities.

hey work closely with grassroots river and watershed groups across the country because they believe supporting each other's efforts is key to the health of rivers nationwide.

uccesses include the preservation of more than 22,000 miles of nationally and regionally significant rivers and over 5.5 million acres of riverside lands.

taff members collaborate with conservation groups, local citizens and businesses, and various federal, state, and tribal agencies to build coalitions and provide technical support to strengthen local and regional conservation efforts.

nd because of this hard work and dedication, their membership is growing to over 33,000. With headquarters in Washington, DC, they operate a regional office in Seattle and eight field offices in Montana, Nebraska, Iowa, Oregon, Tennessee, California, Connecticut, and South Dakota.

The latest news from American Rivers — they've just opened a Mid-Atlantic office located in Harrisburg, Pa. Sara Nicholas, previously of the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, also located in Harrisburg, has signed on as the Associate Director of Dam Programs. She'll be working on the challenges of dam removals and fish passage restorations throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, which includes Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. You can reach Sara at 717-232-8355.

Also new from the AR office - grant opportunities!
