Mountain Bike Fly Fishing

By Alex Djordjevic

ave you ever thought of combining mountain biking with fly fishing? Well, you should! It’s not only better for the environment, it’s better for you. Hi, my name is Alex Djordjevic, and I just took a trip with the Western Pennsylvania Field Institute. There were about eleven of us going on the trip, some fishermen, some mountain bikers, all exited to get outside and enjoy nature.

e began our adventure with a two hour drive north of Pittsburgh to Porcupine Creek, in the Crawford Reserve. After getting all of our supplies ready, we headed off on a challenging three mile ride, passing old logging trails, and surrounded by incredible scenery. We learned how mountain biking caused much less damage to the environment than motor vehicles, is a great work out, and is a excellent alternative to reaching your favorite fishing hole.

fter arriving to our spot, and a short rest, we began fly fishing. We learned about tying flies, and after a short while, our group was busy catching fish. This was a great trip, and I would recommend trying it for yourself, and also would encourage joining the Western Pennsylvania Field Institute, for one of the many other trips they have offered.
