Abandoned Mine Drainage (AMD)
If you’ve been anywhere in the Bituminous and Anthracite regions of Pennsylvania then you have most likely been witness to the aftermath of the mining industry. AMD is just one of the environmental tragedies that mining causes but it is one of the most visual.

Agricultural Impact
If you were to see a cow standing in a stream you might not think anything of it. But the truth is that the farming industry can have a tremendous impact not only on water quality but on stream stability as well. There are many other agricultural impacts that affect our watersheds, and you can learn more about them here.

Dam Removal
Pennsylvania and Wisconsin have more dams on their rivers than any other states. Next to Alaska, Pennsylvania has more miles of river than any other state. Put those two facts together and it adds up to a lot of dams on Pennsylvania’s rivers. While many of the larger dams are still being used for the hydroelectric energy they produce, many of the smaller ‘mill’ dams are no longer serving a purpose and are slowly being removed to free up our rivers.

Public Events
From stream clean ups to watershed festivals, volunteers have proven that the best way to educate the public about the environment is to just get out there and get your feet wet.
