It might sound strange, but it’s a fact
that we are all exposed to a wide range of toxins,
chemicals, and pollutants through the air we breathe,
clothes we wear, water we drink, and food we eat,
every day. For adults, most of these frequent
exposures are minute and have no effect, but the
story can be quite different for children because
their bodies are still developing and what might
seem like a small concentration of something to
a 180 pound adult can be a large concentration
to an infant or five year old child. It’s
a good idea to be aware of some of the more common
threats to children’s health and what you
can do to prevent them from causing your children
harm.
HEALTH EFFECTS OF DIESEL
EXHAUST School buses transport millions of
kids to and from classes across the country
every day, but because a large majority run
on diesel fuel, the ride to school might be
affecting students’ health.
WORRIES ABOUT ARSENIC
TREATED WOOD
Until 2003, most of the "pressure treated"
lumber used in outdoor construction for things
like decks, playgrounds, and picnic tables
was soaked in a chemical called chromated
copper arsenate, which contains arsenic.
TRYING TO LIVE SAFELY
IN A TOXIC WORLD
Because children play on the ground and put their hands in their mouths, they
can be exposed to chemicals such as pesticides much more easily than the average
adult. Such exposures can have more serious results.
