Children are our most vital resource, for our hope for the future rests in their hands. Young bodies and minds need healthy environments to thrive, and because children are constantly developing, they are more susceptible to small exposures of pollution than healthy adults. Indoor and outdoor air quality, smoke, chemicals, old paint, even trace minerals in drinking water can all impact children's health. The good news is that asthma, lead poisoning, and problems stemming from toxins that are a part of everyday life can be managed or prevented if parents are aware and informed.

This site is intended to provide more information about the major causes of environmental illness in children and what can be done about them. An ounce of prevention certainly is worth a pound of cure when it comes to children's health, so take a look around to learn how to minimize your child's exposure to pollutants, how to recognize problem signs, and where to turn if sickness occurs.

According to the American Lung Association, about 5.2 million children are affected by asthma every year. In Philadelphia, PA, asthma is the number one medical reason children are truant from school. Although asthma can't be cured, there are many preventative steps parents can take to decrease the frequency and severity of attacks. There are also ways children can manage their own asthma "triggers" to keep the disease under control.

The Centers for Disease Control estimates that nearly 500,000 American children have elevated levels of lead in their blood. Lead poisoning can cause learning disabilities, behavioral problems, and in the most extreme cases, can even result in death. One of the most troubling things about lead poisoning is that it usually appears without symptoms and that one of the major causes — lead paint — is found in 90% of inner city homes. Fortunately, lead poisoning is completely preventable if parents know what to do.
