Energy Thinking
The videos presented in this section were reformatted as classroom companions to the PA Department of Education's Energy Thinking curriculum. Each video offers a real world look at the concepts discussed in the Energy Thinking unit. The entire curriculum is available for download in the "Resources" section.

Selecting the "Correlations" link from any of the Learning Pods provides a detailed look at the video's alignment with both Environment and Ecology and Science and Technology standards. The "Resources" section houses a wealth of additional background information. The other parts of the Learning Pod will be developed as this site evolves, based on feedback from you and your peers, so please keep an eye on the site. And keep in touch >>

ENERGY CHOICES
(Introduction, Chapter 1)

We take electricity for granted, but how often do we think about where it comes from, or about its environmental cost? The video in this Learning Pod shows how electricity is created. It also discusses the cause and effect of using fossil fuels to produce electricity and other alternative sources of energy available today. Go >>

ENERGY AWARE
(Chapters 3, 4, 5)

This story takes students into a 90 year old row home that has been outfitted with solar panels and dozens of electric meters for an amazing exploration of energy use. Owner Andy Rudin’s utility bills are non-existent because he’s made a game of energy efficiency and because he gets paid a premium for sending his excess clean energy back into the grid. Go >>

DRIVE CLEAN
(Chapter 2)

Contrary to popular belief, fossil-fuels are not the only means of powering trucks, buses, and cars. This story rides along with the Tour de Sol, and uncovers an amazing array of low emission, high gas mileage vehicles that are powered by everything from reclaimed vegetable oil to hydrogen fuel. PLUGGED IN!
(Chapter 3)

Lights, refrigeration, television sets, and computers are all powered by electricity. It’s hard to imagine existence without electricity, but how does it all work? This story takes a look inside “the Grid”, and follows electricity from far-off generating plants to the outlets in our homes, then joins a group of students from Neshaminy High School as they learn about the energy required to make electricity work. HOME EFFICIENCY
(Chapters 4, 5)

Heating and cooling can account for nearly half of a home’s energy bill. Follow Betsy Teutsch through an energy audit of her home and discover the cracks and leaks that let heat slip away. Then go shopping for Energy Star appliances and light bulbs that emit light rather than heat.Go >>

ENERGY & BUILDINGS
(Chapters 4, 5)

Energy is a large part of a building’s operating cost. Energy savings translate into a healthier environment and more money to put to community use. This story looks at opportunities for efficiency at one old church, which can also be applied to schools and other institutions. Go >>
