CITIZENS TAKE ACTION!

Start an Environmental Town Watch like the Durham Township EAC

To deter environmental violations in Durham Township, EAC members are continuing an eight-year-old Environmental Town Watch. Signs were placed around the township at the township borders and at places where it has been known that people dump trash. A number is provided on the signs for residents to report violations or problems. This is not an enforcement program, but serious violations can be reported through a township representative to the State Police and over the years it has helped to reduce incidents of trash dumping. Signs in the township are a good way to make residents aware that environmental violations exist and can be reported. This also gives them some of the responsibility for protecting the resources of the township.

“Over the years we received several calls varying in severeness from trash dumped to a contractor dumping old asphalt on someone else's property (he removed it after we contacted him). I believe it had helped the trash dumping but has not done anything to deter the littering,” says David Juall the EAC chair.

An EAC member is the Director of the Environmental Town Watch and through the township secretary, he would be first notified of a problem. For more information contact the Durham Township Municipal Office at 1-610-346-8911 and ask for the Environmental Town Watch Director or the EAC.
