HEALING ON THE WATER
Some people use time on the water as a source of spiritual healing. On the Schuylkill River, in the heart of Philadelphia, a group of breast cancer survivors gathered to compete in the World's Cup of dragon boat racing. An excuse to strengthen their physical bodies and their bonds together, the river proved an invaluable tool in overcoming many hardships.

Learn more about how one incredible group of women discovered the power and joy of dragon boat racing and the natural world around them.

OUR EXTRA
Dragon boat teams can be found all around the world. But if you haven't had a chance to join one yet, it's always nice to get involved. Check out these simple instructions on how to get started, albeit on a small scale...dragon image

Build Your Own Dragon Boat
Start off with an empty milk carton. Depending on how big your paddlers are, choose either a full-sized or a school lunch milk carton. Rinse the carton out thoroughly with soap and water to make sure it is clean. Then carefully cut the cartoon in half the long way. You now have the body to your boat.

Use markers, felt, Popsicle sticks, sequins and other materials to construct a dragon's head at one end of the boat. Further decorate the length of it until it looks sharp. Use action figures, paper dolls or some other light-weight toys as paddlers. Then fill up your bath tub or kitchen sink and get racing! (If you want, attached a piece of dental floss or fishing line to the front of the boat so that you can pull it around.)

These dragon boats aren't quite as magical as the real thing, but they're still pretty darn cool. Try it out for yourself and see. ( back to top )
