The Mistake on the Lake

Another Pennsylvania resource which helped the state thrive was Lake Erie. It allowed the northwest portion of Pennsylvania to be a part of the world’s travel and trade industries. This brought many people and jobs to the area.

For decades tons of chemicals, oils and human waste drained into the lake. The fish which were caught and eaten contained high levels of poisons. Guidelines didn’t exist. The once pristine Lake Erie was now considered ecologically “dead”. And now other challenges are changing the balance of its ecosystem.

Two non-indigenous organisms are now living and breeding in Lake Erie. They are Zebra Mussels and the Gobe Fish. Although they are actually helping to clean the water, they’re also a threat to native species. How were they introduced to the Great Lake?

A. Big Bang Theory

B. Run-off from Atlantis

C. Ballast Release
