Digging up New Problems

A new natural resource, coal, was discovered in Pennsylvania. Coal mining was a way of life for immigrants and their future generations. But, as with anything in life, if people don’t exercise moderation the balance of nature is disrupted. On January 22, 1959, the Susquehanna River collapsed onto the Knox coal mine. People died and thousands of lives changed in an instant.

Another environmental problem caused by the coal industry is acid mine drainage. It's the single largest source of water pollution in the state and in the Chesapeake Bay.

The pollution from the mining industry that contaminates PA’s waterways, known as acid mine drainage contains which of the following contaminants?

A. Sulfuric Acid and Yellow Boy

B. Battery Acid and Blue Boy

C. Hydrochloric Acid and Red Man
