Local community organizations have always
been at the forefront of environmental improvement. Advances
in technology have helped grassroots groups become even more
successful in recent years by giving people access to up-to-date
and easy-to-understand scientific information about the environmental
conditions in their own neighborhoods. Examples of these successes
in action can be found in the Environmental Protection Agency's
Environmental Monitoring for Public Access and Community Tracking
(EMPACT) program, specifically designed to put environmental
technology into the hands of local groups.
