The Schuylkill River Sojourn 2001 was recently held June 2-8, and traveled 106 miles down Pennsylvania's first Scenic River, from Schuylkill Haven to Philadelphia. Avid and amateur paddlers in canoes and kayaks joined in, some for the whole week, others for just a day or two.

The Schuylkill River Greenway Association sponsored the event. Along route, more than forty organizations, businesses and communities hosted the Sojourners as they made their way down river providing food, places to rest, and hospitality.

The festivities began in Schuylkill Haven Friday night, June 1, when the Schuylkill Haven Area Historical Society and Schuylkill Headwaters Assn. presented a History Alive! evening with Rich Pawling, well known historian and actor, as he performed as John Hummel, Schuylkill Canal boatman.

The Sojourn ended at noon on Friday, June 8, in Philadelphia at Fairmount Park's Lloyd Hall, where Sojourners arrived, escorted by the Philadelphia Women's Dragon Boat Team.

Additional programs on birding, historic mills, and 19th century timbering practices were just a few of the highlights for sojourners to learn and appreciate more about the Schuylkill River environment, past and present.
