Lehigh River Sojourn Journal Day 6
Nick S. June 27, 2002 Todays the last day. Greg and I got up too early. We thought breakfast was a 7:00, so we got up at 6:00. We got up Mr. Mauser and he told us breakfast was at 7:30. So we got dressed and ready for the day and then took down our tents. We then set up the wet tent out to dry. It sat out in the sun until after breakfast. For breakfast I ate eggs, sausage, and a bagel, and for a drink I had an orange juice. When we were done eating we took down the tent and put it away. Next, we got our canoe and put our things in it. When we came back up the bank we got our Pfds and paddles and waited for the safety briefing. After that we got in our canoes and started down the river. When we were going down the river we passed the Bethlehem Steel Plant. You could see the difference between the first part of the Sojourn and the final stretch. Closer to the end of the journey, you could see how industrialized it was next to the river compared to the beginning in White Haven. Today on the river Greg and I were learning how to paddle with Mr. Mauser in the middle, until we stopped at lunch. Today it was at the Bethlehem Boathouse. Before lunch started we had a program about the problems and solutions of the Lehigh watershed. When that was over I ate a turkey sandwich with chips and chocolate desserts. Sarah, your Grandfather says, Hi. I just wanted to throw that in for the person working the boathouse at this town. There is also a pool here and people are swimming in it. When lunch was over Greg and I paddled with Mr. Mauser in the middle. It was a long paddle until we got to the canal. There we went through the lock in Hughmore Park. It took about 4 minutes. We then had to paddle down to a portage area where we went back into the river. From there we went to our final destination, got out of our canoe, and started typing our journals. Everyone then got together for a group picture. I was glad and sad all at once to leave the Sojourn. My favorite part of the Lehigh River Sojourn 2002 was meeting all the different people. I liked the food and enjoyed the reptiles and amphibians program. I am once again glad that I have come and would like to come again on another sojourn. |
