June 26, 2002

Today we started out early. Breakfast was at 7:00 and we got up around 5:30, so we took down the tents and got everything ready for the day. Everybody that we made friends with left home on the fourth day except Jamie, so we didn't get to talk to Caleb today. When breakfast came I ate a waffle, bagel, and some toast with orange juice. We ate that pretty quick and had even more time to kill. Then we got ready to canoe.

Greg and I started out in the canoe by ourselves because Mr. Mauser was helping the safety load people into their canoes. So Greg and I had enough time to practice steering in the front and rear. When Mr. Mauser got into the canoe we were almost ready to go.

We had a calm ride today with some rapids. I was tired from the long week and the heat. I drank plenty of water so I wouldn't get dehydrated. Next lunch came.

For lunch we had meatball subs with fresh fruit and some pink lemonade. When we ate lunch my family came including my dad. My mom also brought the boy she baby sits name Andrew. We talked for about how our day was and they updated me with what's going on. For the program we went to the Allentown sewage treatment plant and we got a tour. It was interesting, but very hot. When I got back on the bus I sat next to Mr. Mauser and he said he could feel the heat coming off me. So I drank the rest of my water bottle so I wouldn't become dehydrated. When we got to the loading area I filled up my water bottle and drank some more water. Soon after we left the loading area a kayak got stuck. Mr. Mauser stopped us and helped the kayak from the rock with the help of the other someone else from the safety patrol. It was a two-person kayak with an older couple using it. We then got back in the canoe and paddled away.

On the way down the river we were to pick up any garbage that didn't belong in the river and put it in the canoe. We found a tricycle, foam container, a cooler, and some cups and cans. When we got back to the campsite we set them next to the trashcan and started to type our journals. In the middle of writing our journals it started to thunderstorm and we had to shut down. One of the problems we had was that one of the tents was ready to be put up and it started to rain, but we had to leave the tent because of the thunder. So the tent got soaked in the rain while we waited. We still waited and we had to type the journals and still make a power point program of the pictures we took on the river, so we went to the icehouse and finished typing. When we finished typing we got ready to eat dinner, which included barbecue chicken, herb roasted potatoes, corn, rolls, cookies, and lemonade. I was very tired today, so I will probably be sleeping well tonight. Tomorrow we will finish the Lehigh River Sojourn.
