June 24, 2002

We have completed the third day. The night before we met a few kids and played cards with them before and after dinner. Their names were Jamie, Caleb, Jace, and Brittney. We got everyone's screen names to keep in touch. The next morning we started off by waking up at 5:30, getting dressed, and cleaning up camp. Next, we drove down to the Jim Thorpe Train Station where we ate breakfast and started our journey for the day. Today's breakfast was cinnamon buns and other pastries with orange juice.

Later we went down to the river and got the safety briefing for the day. After that we went down in a eddy practiced paddling for a while. Next we went to the first set of rapids and were successful. We continued our way down the river until we stopped at lunch. Today we had bagel sandwiches with chips or pretzels and a cookie. For our drink we had a choice of soda or water. The program talked about our native plants. It talked about how we need to get rid of invasive plants and replace them with native plants. It also talked about how invasive plants aren't decrease biodiverse.

After lunch we went down the river through a couple more rapids. We had to stop on our own and empty the water out of our canoes. On one of the big rapids we filled up about half of the canoe with water. The wave went over the canoe and right on top of me. I was drenched from head to toe. I think that was the most exciting part of the day. Sarah Schlesinger and Jan Walters, from the Bucks County area, had more water than we did, so we took a picture of them for being the only other people with more water in their canoe. When we were waiting to portage on a low-head dam, Chuck Shiner was rushed to the hospital. I'm not sure what was wrong, but I know he was conscious. At the time it was also raining and you could hear some thunder. We finished the rest of the day in the water with no problem.

We docked at the Walnutport Canal and set up our tent. We had sausage, corn, and potatoes made and served by the Walnutport Canal Association. Mr. Mauser really enjoyed the New England Clam Chowder. Dessert was vanilla or chocolate cake with vanilla icing.
