We pushed off, and headed into the canal. Almost immediately, the trip encountered the Josiah White II, the park’s touring canal boat. It is a reproduction of the boats that ran the canal in the 1800’s, therefore it was bigger than our tiny canoes. Everyone cleared a path for the Josiah White II, and we paddled off. A mile or so down the canal, we hit the lock along Hugh Moore park. It took about five minutes to pass through the lock. After exiting the lock, we portaged back into the river. As the last canoes were being brought into position, an official boat from the City of Easton informed us that a thunderstorm would hit in 30 minutes. Safety gave the “Head’em up and move’em out” signal. At full speed, we paddled down the river, flanking Dave, who was in the lead position. The convoy of color passed under a bridge, and came into sight of our final landing area. We paddled with new energy (well, I think they paddled with new energy. I wasn’t paddling), until we pulled out of the water, our final landing.

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip, and can’t wait until next year’s sojourn. The people we met were so friendly, and we came to known them in such a short time. While I am glad to be going home, I will miss the experiences of the Lehigh River Sojourn
