Lehigh River Sojourn Journal Day 6, Morning
Greg A.
June 27, 2002
Woke up bright and early, and began to pack. Soon, Nick and Mr. Mauser were
up, and we broke camp, took down tents, and all of the other jobs that had
become so routine. They seemed to be more final than before, assuring us
that this was the end of it all. We heard the final safety talk, which we
could just about repeat word for word, and put in for the last time. As
we paddled down, Bethlehem Steel dominated the left bank, its idle machinery
making it seem like a long-dead monster. This industrialized left bank contrasted
with the jungle-like appearance of the right bank, showing some of the great
contrasts on the river.
The rest of the paddle was flatwater, so Mr. Mauser let Nick & I take
over. Thankfully, we had no communications difficulties today, and we pulled
safely into Bethlehem Boat Launch, where we heard a presentation on the
problems and solutions on the Lehigh River watershed. After that we ate
lunch, and Mr. Mauser and Mr. Gettings brought the laptops, so we could
journal.
I would like to conclude the journal now, but the end of the trip is still
a hours off, I will need to finish this account later.
