River rafting, canoeing, and kayaking are great ways
to cool off at this time of year, but did you know that every June,
thousands of people get out and commune with others on organized River
Sojourns? Get the inside scoop on how getting close up to nature
on the water can be relaxing, rejuvenating, and motivating while
helping us appreciate just how valuable our waterways are... |

It wasn’t too long ago that many
of our rivers were calling out for our attention. Pollution, waste,
and human neglect contributed to the wide spread pollution of our
fresh water resources and waterways.
It’s hard to believe, but the Cuyahoga River was so polluted
with chemicals from industrial and chemical plants that it actually
caught on fire! Outrage filled communities in New York when they learned
that their cherished Hudson River was being polluted with toxic chemicals,
killing all the aquatic species, and causing health hazards to the
downstream communities.
Unfortunately, water pollution is not a thing of the past. But these
events, and others like it brought attention to the need to protect
our fresh water resources. Local communities and individuals have
taken on much of the work, and have succeeded in passing protective
laws, stricter restrictions, and have formed community watch groups
and volunteer efforts to test and regulate water quality. While there’s
still much to be done to clean up our waterways and protect our health,
it’s the work of these individuals and groups that have made
a difference toward cleaner, healthier water for everyone. Protecting
our water from pollution is not only good for the environment, but
good for our own health as well, and there are many ways for individuals
to get involved.
One way to help maintain good water quality is by making a personal
connection with the rivers your area through a river sojourn event.
River sojourns are an excellent opportunity for people to get into
a canoe or kayak, paddle down river with a group of like-minded people,
and experience the scenic beauty and natural resources that our rivers
offer. These organized events offer the chance to get away from the
mad rush of life, and simply enjoy the serenity of nature, all while
having a lot of fun with your fellow sojourners.
No experience or boat needed. All one needs is the willingness to
travel a different road – one that leaves no trace of your passing.
So why not get involved in a sojourn journey today.
If you're a sojourner, and would like to contribute your own photos,
or journal entries from your experience, please send them to talktous@greentreks.org.
