James Stanley owns an auto body shop in the Parkside neighborhood
of Philadelphia. Ten years ago, his passion for landscaping led
him to start building community gardens in the vacant lots surrounding
his business and home. He has created 3 beautiful gardens; the largest
is made up of 5 adjacent empty lots. James transplants seeds and
plants from his hometown in Georgia to give his garden a touch of
home. He used recycled metal cans from his auto repair shop to build
columns in his garden. James employs neighborhood kids and troubled
youth to work in the gardens-and he pays them out of his own pocket.

in the process she has turned a run-down drug-infested neighborhood
into a place where people can feel pride in their community.
