| In just a quick tour on the boat with
Maya, we came across 4-count 'em-4 potential dangers to
the Delaware river. And our ever diligent Riverkeeper
didn't let one of them slip by unnoticed! |
| Our first stop was a tributary on the
Jersey side of the Delaware River, not far from the Walt
Whitman Bridge, called Big Timber Creek. Besides being
home to beautiful wetlands and wildlife, the creek borders
a residential neighborhood where people have dumped construction
refuse on the banks. |
| As we motored back out onto
the main stem, an oil tanker passed us on its way to the
Atlantic Ocean. Maya told us about plans to "deepen
the Delaware." |
| Not every danger happens "on"
the river. As a jet passed overhead on a landing path
to Philadelphia International Airport, Maya told us about
a possible flight path change. |
| As if we
hadn't already been through enough, we passed a sewage
treatment plant on our way back to the dock that was spitting
out some ugly foam. |
| And all this
happened in just one hour! Starting to get a picture of
how much energy you need to be the Riverkeeper? |
"You're not allowed to dump your refuse in the
river"
"People think the Clean Water Act
protects our river..."
