| Maya went to law school
and assisted John Cronin before becoming the Delaware
Riverkeeper. But her passion and concern for the environment
began when she was just a kid. Now her daughter, Anneke,
is growing up with the same inspiration. |

| As an advocate for the river,
you have to be strong and stand your ground. You can't
back down when opponents who are more powerful than you
try to push you around. But you also need to be able to
see both sides of the argument. You have to be grateful
for even the smallest win and bounce right back when you
lose. And although you end up spending more time in public
meetings and courtrooms than you do on the river, you
always have to check back in with the precious resource
you are protecting. |

|
| And, oh yeah, you have to have a really
good sense of humor because you don't get much sleep and
you have to carry a pen and paper with you all the time
in case you get a good idea
