About Rough Terrain Archives Send Your Stories Talking to Eel Man Meet the Eel Man Talking to Eel Man
Ray has spent most of his life on this river. He works on the same eel weir that his father used to work on with a friend of his. Ray spent his childhood as both a bait and fly fisherman, and he would hang out around the same weir that he works on today. So when the rack became available after two of Ray's friends left it, Ray jumped at the chance to take over the weir and he has been working on it ever since.

Ray works the weir by himself with only the help of Smell, for the most part. He will get volunteers to help him build the weir in the spring and early summer. Ray enjoys it all the same if he gets to stack the rocks by himself. It is a time of tranquility and peace where he can just be alone, with Mother Nature, and his dog.

Besides just catching eels, Ray is also a Gourmet Consultant. He can prepare eel alone over a half dozen different ways. He also has a smoke house on his property where he smokes and prepares the eels that he catches to sell.
