Adopt-a-Windmill Campaign
by Thurm Brendlinger, Program Manager of the Wind Campaign for Clean Air Council

he Clean Air Council is pleased to announce the Adopt-A-Windmill Campaign for residential wind purchases. This Campaign allows Pennsylvania residents to purchase a portion of their electricity needs from wind farms in the state by purchasing blocks of wind energy. Each block costs $2.50 and is equal to 100 kWh hours of electricity. The average household uses 600 kWh per month or 6 blocks. The goal of the Adopt-A-Windmill Campaign is to sell one 1.5 MW turbine worth of wind energy to residential customers.

The environmental benefits of a wind purchase are substantial. Based on a 1.5MW turbine, the environmental offsets include preventing over 1 million pounds of coal from being mined and more than 4 million pounds of Carbon Dioxide (a major contributor to global warming and climate change) from polluting our air. One turbine will keep 36,000 pounds of Sulfur Dioxide (the leading contributor to acid rain) and over 11,000 pounds of Nitrous Oxides (a contributor to smog and regional haze) from entering the earth's atmosphere. To put this in perspective, the operation of a wind turbine is environmentally equivalent to planting over 300,000 trees or driving over 400,000 miles less .

Wind energy is an alternative source of electricity that produces no waste or air emissions. It is the cleanest option available in Pennsylvania for electricity production. Fossil fuels create large amounts of emissions and wastes that are responsible for global warming, ozone depletion, smog, acid rain, and mercury contamination. Pennsylvania is currently one of the largest wind energy producers in the eastern United States. In the next two years, the wind industry has plans for an additional 141 MW of wind-generated electricity in Pennsylvania.
