Heating and Cooling
Image 1 Simple Ways to Protect the Environment
Most Americans spend 44% of their home energy costs on heating and cooling. Paying attention to your heating and cooling systems can save you a lot of money. It can also help the environment.

According to the Department of Energy, global warming is accelerated by the half billion tons plus of carbon dioxide Americans release while heating and cooling their homes and businesses each year. The energy created for heating and cooling purposes also generates about 24% of our country's sulfur dioxide and 12% of our nitrogen oxides, the leading causes of acid rain.

To help your budget, your health and the environment, please follow these simple tips:

1Set your thermostat as low as comfortable in the winter, and as high as comfortable in the summer. Lowering your thermostat from 70 to 68 degrees in the winter can save you about 10% in heating costs!

2Get a programmable thermostat. There's less need to heat or cool the house when you're at work or when you're asleep.

3Keep your shades closed when it's hot out and open when it's cold.

4Don't block vents. Vents and radiators blocked with furniture operate less efficiently.

5Clean your baseboard heaters, warm-air registers and radiators as needed. Even dust can affect your energy consumption.

6Use ventilation fans sparingly. Bathroom and kitchen fans can pull out a houseful of warm or cool air in just an hour.
