Dr. Tom Dick
Producer, Alex Djordjevic
When I first heard about Dr. Tom Dick and the 160-acre
wetland he created, I was intrigued and had to see
it for myself. My journey first took me to his veterinary
clinic in Johnstown, PA. For a serious environmental
advocate, he sure was a lot of fun, wearing a Hawaiian
shirt and joking with his staff. We discussed his
veterinary practice, fondness for wildlife, environmental
concerns, and ongoing projects to improve the environment,
including the wetlands.
The next day at sunrise, he finally took me to the
wetlands, and it was quite a site. It was hard to
believe that it was all man-made. It felt so natural,
being surrounded by all kinds of wildlife and plant
life, and couldn’t believe that just recently
it had been an abandoned farm.
Meeting Dr. Tom Dick and seeing his wetlands was
definitely a unique experience. I am very glad to
have had the opportunity to film a man who is helping
make a difference, and improving the environment
around him. |

| Long
Wall Mining
Producer, Kelly Meinhart
Having traveled around the state of Pennsylvania,
I have seen the damages that mining has done to
our beautiful countryside. It has polluted streams,
degraded habitats, and left many communities to
foot the bill of remediation.
It wasn’t until I traveled to the southwest
corner of the state, to Greene and Washington
Counties that I met up with a new evil in the
environmental arena. Long wall mining, as I learned,
is a highly effective type of mining that gathers
more coal from the earth than any other type.
But it does so at many expenses.
I hope to return to the area to visit the folks
who were so gracious in telling their stories,
and the tragedies that have resulted from the
mining. These are every day folks like you or
I, only the ground is falling out beneath them.
